The celebration of Spiritual Harmony Day has a long history. On October 18, 1992, the First Congress for Spiritual Harmony opened in Almaty. Its participants - prominent religious and public figures from Austria, Great Britain, Germany, India, Italy, Russia, the USA, Switzerland and other countries - proposed to declare the opening day of the Congress the Day of World Spiritual Harmony.

More than 300 representatives from 54 spiritual and public organizations around the world, as well as envoys from various theological schools and institutes, took part in the congress. About 400 journalists from 46 countries received accreditation.

Congress participants called for a moratorium on any disputes and discussions to be established on October 18, devote the day to prayers and meditations calling for unity and co-service in mercy, provide other forms that promote mutual understanding and spiritual harmony among the people of the Earth.

A number of public organizations in different countries have been celebrating this date for more than 30 years. They hold charity events, thematic events, and concerts dedicated to establishing mutual understanding and reconciliation between people of different nationalities and faiths, as well as to the traditions of mercy.

Since 2017, the initiative has been supported by the Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly.
