A delegation of scientists from St. Petersburg and Vorkuta led by the President of the Arctic Public Academy of Sciences Arseniy Mitko and Scientific Secretary, Chairman of the Arctic Council of the Eurasian Peoples' Assembly Marina Minina visited the Luga district of the Leningrad region. A visiting session of the Academy discussed the work plans for the second half of the year and decided to hold the Arctic Readings in Luga.
The visit traditionally began with a visit to the burial place of Admiral Ivan Ivanovich de Traverse in the village of Romanshchina - the chief commander of the Black Sea ports and the military governor of Sevastopol and Nikolaev, the Minister of the Sea of Russia, known as the initiator and organizer of expeditions that discovered Antarctica and made a number of important geographical discoveries in the Arctic Ocean.
The annual visit to the Romanshchina has already become a good tradition among the members of the Arctic Academy. A scientific project associated with the name of the famous admiral is being implemented here.
Members of the Academy held a subbotnik at the burial site of I.I. Traverse, laid flowers at his grave, and also met with Father Jannuarius. He said that documents had already been collected to register the Tikhvin Church and transfer it to the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church. Now the Tikhvin Church in the Romanshchina, at the altar of which Admiral Traverse is buried, is ascribed to the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Toroshkovichi.
The conversation with Father Iannuarius was about outstanding Russian navigators and naval leaders - natives of the Luzhsky region and about the implementation of the project "The Harbour of Young Mariners and Young Sailors" in the Luzhsky district.
It is worth noting that on July 9, on the day of the memory of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, the Divine Liturgy was performed within the walls of the temple for the first time in more than 60 years, and the parishioners were able to celebrate the Patronal Feast here.
Then the delegation visited the village of Navolok, the family estate of the Neplyuevs. Representatives of this noble family in the 17th century participated in two expeditions to Novaya Zemlya.
After a short excursion to Lake Cheremenets and getting acquainted with the sights, a field meeting of the Academy was held in the hospitable estate Zarechye, where plans for the second half of the year were discussed. Among other things, it was unanimously decided to hold the Arctic Readings in Luga.
