The significance of the regional dimension of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the contribution of regional integration associations to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were discussed during the side event “The role of regional integration in achieving the SDGs: the EAEU and other structures”. The event was organized by the Eurasian Economic Commission in the format of video conference within the UNECE Regional Forum on Sustainable Development.

The opening was attended by Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Office in Geneva Sergei Vasiliev and First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the UN Office in Geneva Ambik Minasyan.

The main speaker was a member of the Supreme Advisory Council of the Eurasian Peoples' Assembly, Minister of Integration and Macroeconomics of the EEC Sergei Glazyev, and the moderator of the discussion was the program director of the Valdai Club, scientific director of the European Institute of MGIMO Oleg Barabanov.

“Eurasian economic integration plays an important role in the economic development of the EAEU states and is an additional factor contributing to the achievement of the SDGs,” noted Sergei Glazyev. “The EAEU countries take successful steps to achieve the SDGs, introducing these goals and objectives into their national program documents, strategies and development concepts.”

Sergei Glazyev spoke about progress in the Eurasian region on a number of SDG indicators, including through the gradual development of the EAEU economic integration agenda and attention to various aspects of economic interaction in sports, healthcare and education.

“The EAEU’s desire to become a self-sufficient, harmoniously developed and attractive macro-region for all countries of the world, which has economic, technological and intellectual leadership and maintains a high level of well-being of the population, significantly resonates with the 2030 Agenda,” emphasized Sergei Glazyev.

A member of the Supreme Advisory Council of the Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly paid special attention to the implementation of SDG 1 “End Poverty” and SDG 2 “End Hunger” and noted that the export of food, primarily wheat and flour, as well as mineral fertilizers from the EAEU states to foreign markets has traditionally been a strong point of the EAEU economy, and the production and resource potential of the Union's countries is capable of providing food for hundreds of millions of people.

Sergey Glazyev emphasized that the insufficient level of progress on a number of SDGs at the global level noted by the UN is largely due to the imperfection of the existing global monetary and financial system, which requires serious reform.
