Online marathon timed to coincide with the International Russian Language Day | 08.06.2021

The online marathon is dedicated to the International Day of the Russian Language, which has been celebrated annually around the world since 2010.

The live performance will be a tribute to the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin and his iconic novel in verse Eugene Onegin (1831), excerpts from which will be recited in all the UN official languages: Russian, Arabic, English, French, Spanish and Chinese. 

The event will take place on June 8 at 16:00 (Moscow) and 15:00 (Geneva).

The Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva Tatiana Valovaya, the rector of MGIMO-University Anatoly Torkunov, the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Gennadiy Gatilov, as well as state officials and figures of culture and art from Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Iraq and China are invited to participate in the online marathon.

The Russian Language Day was established as a national holiday in 2011, when the Russian President signed the dedicated Decree to «establish the Day of the Russian Language and celebrate it annually, June 6, on the birthday of the great Russian poet, founder of the modern Russian literary language A.S. Pushkin».

The online marathon «Eugene Onegin: watching, talking, reading» will be moderated by the president of the Foundation for Social Initiatives «Peace and Harmony», the head of the Foundation «Russian Cultural Seasons», the general producer of the project «Theatrical Russia», Member of the General Council of the Eurasian Peoples' Assembly, Chairperson of the Council for International Cultural Cooperation of the Eurasian Peoples' Assembly Elmira Shcherbakova.

The event is organized with the support of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva.
