The second day of the fifth anniversary summit "The Arctic and Offshore Projects: Prospects, Innovations and Regional Development", held in the two capitals of Russia, is under way. Today, all events are held in St. Petersburg, at the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and River Fleet. The agenda includes issues of sustainable development of the Arctic regions, said Marina Minina, Chairperson of the Arctic Council of the Eurasian Peoples' Assembly and Executive Director of the Arctic-2021 Summit, told the “Narodnye Novosti”.

"Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of guests is limited - only 150 people, plus the press. Due to the restrictions imposed by companies, unfortunately, many participants from the regions were unable to come, but they will be present online. The summit discusses transport problems, issues of sustainable development of the Arctic regions, social infrastructure, as well as everything related to the implementation of the planned programs within the signed strategy for the Arctic, " - Minina said.

The Executive Director of "Arctic-2021 SPb" noted that the main principle, the organizers of the Forum adhere to, is the consolidation of science, government and business on the basis of civil society.

“Our multi year activity allows us we pursue a policy that connects state institutions, public and scientific organizations, and all this is done for people interested in the Arctic. We work a lot with young people and students. Most of our academy members are university professors, therefore, each summit we have a competition for scientific papers among students. The laureates then come to us personally and actually speak for the first time in their lives with their developments in front of such a venerable scientific community. This is very important for them," - Minina emphasized.

According to Minina, this year there are much more young participants in the Summit, and today many of them will meet at a round table on patriotic maritime education, which will be held jointly with the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and River Fleet. She also shared some of the achievements of the forums.

"The first two summits were held in Moscow. They were investment summits, and we agreed to cooperate with various organizations, both Russian and foreign. One of these agreements resulted in a project related to the support and monitoring of oil spills to Pacific Ocean in pipeline of Eastern Siberia. We worked together with scientists of the Republic of Sakha, Yakutia and the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. Also as part of this Forum, we signed several agreements on cooperation, which continues to this day. New partners, research and scientific projects appear we apply our efforts to, since there are more than 100 doctors of sciences in our ranks. Every year more and more scientists participate in our projects," - Minina concluded.

The Arctic Summit is held on May 26 - 28 in Moscow and St. Petersburg and is timed to coincide with the Year of Science and Technology in Russia.

The Forum organizers are the Arctic Council of the Eurasian Peoples' Assembly, the Arctic Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Arctic Oil and Gas Technologies of Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, Russian University of Transport and Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and River Fleet. It is supported by the St. Petersburg Committee for Arctic Affairs and a number of other state and public structures.
