Maria Zakharova, Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, welcomed the International teleconference "Meeting on Elbe 75", organized by the Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly on April 24:

- Dear friends!

I welcome the participants of the International space bridge “Meeting on the Elbe 75”, which is held on the occasion of the meeting of the Armies of the Soviet Union and USA and the end of the Second World war. This event is considered to be one of the brightest symbols of cooperation between our two countries.

I am convinced that holding such teleconferences is extremely important. They allow us to preserve and protect the truth about our historical past. They help us talk about how our peoples together faced a common global threat. This is especially true during the celebration of the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic war.

Because of the epidemic, most events are now held in unusual conditions, remotely; many are quarantined or self-isolated in their apartments and homes. On the one hand, it is sad that we will not witness the traditional May celebrations this year. On the other hand, we have the opportunity to read more, learn more, and think more about those times. New circumstances allow us to take a closer look at our common history and try to understand it. The memory of the alliance of those years is vital to us today. I hope that we can still unite in the fight against a common danger, forgetting about past disputes.

The meeting on the Elbe is a demonstration of how common goals and interests outweigh all differences. I want to believe that now the voices of sanity will be louder and we will build a safe and prosperous world hand in hand, having learned all the lessons of the past by heart.

Good luck and health!
