International Public Forum "Remembrance Day of the Soldiers of the 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division" | 21.02.2022

On February 21, 2022 at 12:00 (Moscow time), the Eurasian Peoples' Assembly will hold the 14th Session of the International Public Forum "Preserving the memory of the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War". The theme of the forum is "Remembrance Day of the soldiers of the 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division".

The forum is supported by the Eurasian Academy of Television and Radio (Russia), the Military Heritage Institute (Lithuania) and the Historical Memory Foundation.

For the first time, educational institutions from Orel, Voronezh regions, Kursk and Murmansk will join the work of the International Public Forum.

The forum is supported by the Glazunov Agricultural College (Oryol region). The partners of the session are: Interregional public organization search team "FAKEL" (Orel, Russia), School No. 43 (Kursk, Russia), Gymnasium No. 9 (Murmansk, Russia), School No. 5 (Borisoglebsk, Voronezh region, Russia).

The purpose of the forum is to draw attention to the issues of preserving the historical memory of peoples, to support the movement against the erosion of the value and semantic aspects of history, the falsification of the results of World War II and the Great Patriotic War.

Earlier, on December 18, 2021, the Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly already held the 10th session of the International Public Forum dedicated to the memory of the 80th anniversary of the formation of the 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division. The forum was held in the format of an online conference. It was attended by the historians, members of public organizations from six countries - Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus and Israel. The task of the session was to unite international public organizations and expand practices for preserving the historical memory of the legendary military unit. More than 1.5 thousand people followed the 10th session of the IPF on the official Facebook page of the Eurasian Peoples' Assembly.

The key moment of the upcoming session is the memory of the baptism of fire of the 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division, which took place in the battles in the Oryol region on February 21, 1943. The division suffered heavy losses in these battles.

The task of the forum is to search for practices for the preservation of the memorial heritage about the exploits of the division.

The forum participants will discuss measures to install a monument and a memorial plaque to "Women Pilots" at the Glazunovka station who died during the Battle of Kursk. The Forum will draw attention to the memorials of the soldiers of the 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division, installed on the territory of the Oryol region, and to holding events for the patriotic education of youth.

The 14th session of the International Public Forum will consider the following issues:

  • The use of new forms in the patriotic education of youth. Involvement of a wide part of students and schoolchildren for participation;
  • Warriors-heroes of the 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division, who participated in the liberation of the Oryol region from Nazi invaders;
  • Preservation of the memory of the 16th Air Division;
  • Feat of female pilots during the Great Patriotic War;
  • Features of the Museum of the Borisoglebsk Aviation School.

The International Public Forum is held in a hybrid format (offline and online).
