Anatoly Karpov: "Space and Chess are My Great Love"

“Space and chess are my great love” is an exhibition of postage stamps that opened in Bratislava (Slovakia) on October 12.

 In the year of the 80th anniversary of the flight of the first man into space and in his jubilee year, fragments of his personal collection dedicated to space themes were presented by Anatoly Karpov, one of the most titled chess players of our time, Deputy Secretary General of the Eurasian Peoples' Assembly. His philatelic collection is considered one of the finest in the world.

At the opening of the exhibition, the grandmaster spoke about his hobby and the history of the collection. Part of the exposition (stamps that have visited space stations and canceled there with special stamps by Russian cosmonauts) also belongs to the famous Russian architect and also a chess player Sergei Tkachenko.

The project was organized by the Russian Embassy in Slovakia, the Russian House and the University Library in Bratislava with the assistance of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, the Eurasian Peoples' Assembly, the Peace and Harmony Foundation and the Russian Cultural Seasons Festival.

At the opening ceremony of the exhibition, the Deputy Chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Y. Blanar, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Slovak Republic I.B. Bratchikov, representatives of the diplomatic corps, Slovak ministries and departments, people of art, science, and the educational sphere took part.

On behalf of the International Union of Non-Governmental Organizations "Eurasian Peoples' Assembly", Secretary General Andrei Belyaninov congratulated the participants, in his written greeting. He expressed the hope that the exhibition would become an important event in the cultural life of Slovakia and a bridge for interaction between peoples and countries of Eurasia in the name of peace and development:

“Space and chess are two areas of application of the highest abilities of human genius. They provide an opportunity for both personal and social improvement. And, of course, they serve to form the consciousness of a person of the third millennium - a person - the creator”.

The exhibition will run at the University Library in Bratislava until November 14, 2021, and then since November 18 to December 6 it will be exhibited  at the Postal Museum in Banska Bystrica.
